Summary
Mr. Vold tells Patrice she only has three sick days, unless she takes a week of unpaid leave with no guarantee of keeping her job. At lunch, Valentine finishes Patrice’s precious raisins, but when she hears about the trip to find Vera, she offers her own sick days as well.
Patrice builds herself a suitcase from canvas and branches and retrieves her money from beneath the floor. The posters on the walls of the Relocation Office promise opportunities and luxury in Minneapolis. Patrice tells Deanna, who works at the office, that they pay Patrice to find one of their lost “relocations.” Just in case, Deanna gives Patrice the address for Bernadette Blue, Juggie’s “bad” daughter. Zhaanat assures Patrice that her father is away. Together, mother and daughter admire how white Patrice looks with her borrowed gloves and curled hair.
