Summary

The final section of Choo’s novel begins with William reminiscing about Iris, his deceased fiancée. She was madly jealous and neurotic throughout their relationship, and William remembers her “uncanny ability to ruin good moments” (307). As he reminisces, the phone rings; Lydia calls and wants to see him to talk about Iris. They arrange to meet at the hospital early the next morning. At 6:45 in the morning, William is about to turn the corner when he hears Lydia talking with a young orderly. Then, “a flickering shadow…plummets, smashing into the young man’s head. He drops, dead weight crumpling” (309). A terra-cotta roof tile has smashed into Y. K. Wong’s head, and he falls down dead in front of Lydia.
