Summary
Ji Lin spends the night with her friend Hui after the shock of seeing Ren shot. She dreams of Yi again and tells him Ren may die. Yi looks guilty and Ji Lin realizes: “’You’ve been waiting for him to die, haven’t you?’” (233). From beyond the grave, Yi has been waiting for and calling to Ren to be with him. He’s upset with himself and wails, “’Yi means righteousness. I’m supposed to be able to choose the right thing, but I can’t!’” (235). Before she wakes up, Ji Lin tells Yi to leave Ren alone.
Ren slips in and out of a coma at the hospital, and in his dreams, he meets the tiger. It gazes at him impenetrably, then walks toward the station. As he fades in and out of consciousness, William is wracked with guilt. He ended up...
