Summary
William Acton throws a party for the hospital staff and hires dancing girls from the May Flower for entertainment. Lydia manages to get invited, much to William’s annoyance. As Ren and the servants prepare, they notice a tiger print in the garden; Ren panics because that’s where he buried the stolen finger. He senses that time is running out.
In his dreams, he sees Yi across a river and decides to swim out to meet him. Yi warns him not to get in the water, but Ren goes anyways, even though the water is “so terribly cold that Ren thinks his heart will stop” (179). He realizes the water is filled with dead things, so he swims back. Upon waking, Ah Long tells him that he’s a terribly high fever. Ren tells Ah Long about his dream, and Ah Long advises Ren...
