Kim's boots
Kim’s army boots symbolize the forceful and determined side of her character. She pairs them with a “pretty floral dress” that emphasizes her youth and femininity, but the incongruously sturdy boots indicate toughness and courage (89).
The heat
The stifling hot June weather is symbolic of the oppressive fear and dread that besets Kim after Tallulah’s disappearance. While others around her are enjoying the summer, Kim is “hot and anxious,” unable to find shade just as she is unable to find answers (37). She strips and showers on her return from Dark Place, but cannot wash away her feelings of discomfort.
