Marina Willett
Marina is the narrator and arguably the protagonist though most of the plot centers around Charlie and Spinks. The majority of the novel is told from her perspective, except for the scenes in which Spinks recounts his story. She is a clinical Psychiatrist who lives and sees patients in New York City. She is married to Charlie Willett for most of the novel, but leaves him after she discovers he had been cheating on her. Even before this point, though, their marriage had difficulties due to Charlie's obsession with his research into Lovecraft and the public's eventual backlash against him upon the revelation that his book was full of lies.
Marina seems to be the more logical, realistic counterpoint to Charlie's wild fantasies and intense emotions. She is constantly asking him if he is sure about doing something risky in the name of research or talking him...
