Summary
Chapter 1 describes Charlie's trip to Florida to visit Barlow's old family home and "go deeper into the world of the story" (81). He was struck by all the billboards advertising guns throughout Florida, but DeLand, the city where Barlow lived, had not changed much since the 1930s. The old Barlow property, which the family had named 'DeLand,' was not inhabited, so Charlie walked around and took pictures. At one point, he heard a noise in another part of the house and panicked, but no one appeared to be there. He recorded video inside of the house and found marks in Barlow's old bedroom noting Barlow and Lovecraft's heights.
