Summary
In Chapter 1, Marina provides some information about H.P. Lovecraft's past. He was born in 1890, and his father was committed to an asylum when he was very young. His mother was nasty to him, telling everyone he was so ugly he should not be outside. She, too, was committed to the asylum when Lovecraft was a young man, and soon after he met Sonia Greene, whom he married. It is unclear whether they loved each other, but it is unlikely as they never kissed, and soon she left. There is not much known about the relationship because Sonia burned Lovecraft's letters. Lovecraft wrote more and more about the necessity of war and the need for Englishmen to conquer the "hordes" of other races, a point that both Marina and Charlie agree is despicable.
