Part 2: “Pursuits,” continued
In Chapter 34: “Leeches and Lizards,” Constance writhes in pain in bed in a state between sleep and being awake called somnambulism. She is watched over by Bertrand and Dr. Crouch while Molly brings boiling water to help warm her. Crouch advices the fever is getting worse in everyone, and they must take bed rest or they will end up in a similar state as Constance. Molly watches as Bertrand rushes to the green door room and the tree. The tree overflows with money, but Bertrand does not care for it. He demands to be let out and that he wants no more money, only a cure for his wife. He collapses and cries. Molly goes to him to comfort him. She realizes she is a part of their story now.
