Summary

The second section of The Night Diary begins with Nisha’s letter to her mother on July 30th, 1947 and ends with her letter on August 7th, 1947. Nisha begins by stating that Papa has breakfast with them one weekday morning, which is unusual. He breaks the news to his children that they will not be able to attend school anymore but will take their lessons at home with Dadi. Nisha and Amil are heartbroken, and Papa explains that since India will be independent from British rule soon, a number of changes are underway, and one effect of this event is that Muslims and Hindus are finding it hard to get along, leading to a partition of the country. Their town of Mirpur Khas will no longer be in India but will be in a new country called Pakistan.
