Lynette's Car
Lynette's rundown car is a symbol of her former self. No matter how unreliable and dangerous the car proves, Lynette cannot get rid of it. In much the same way, no matter how messy her past has been, Lynette cannot stop holding onto the dreams associated with them. When she gets rid of the car at the end, Lynette is letting go of her old self, her old mistakes and hopes.
Doreen's Car
Doreen's new car symbolizes pride. Doreen tells Lynette that she is disgusted with herself. She dislikes her job, her body, and her life. Her old vehicle is another source of embarrassment and shame for her. By buying the new car, Doreen attempts to assert herself, to reclaim autonomy over her life. However, this decision proves empty, and incapable of fully changing her outlook.
