On His Own: The Light of the World Summary
Nick, now seventeen, visits a bar with his friend, Tom. After ordering a few drinks, they get into a fight with the bartender and leave to go to the train station. There, they find an eclectic group of people: a cook, one very large prostitute named Alice, two prostitutes who are slightly less large, two skinny blond prostitutes, and a few others. When they arrive, Alice is teasing the cook. Nick and Tom converse with the group and a famous, murdered boxer, Steve Ketchel, is brought up. One of the blondes claims to have been in love with with Steve Ketchel and gets into a fight with Alice who claims she had slept with Steve and did not believe that the blonde had.
