Summary

In Chapter 1, Letty arrives in the parking lot of the Murmuring Surf, an older motel just across the road from the beach in Treasure Island, Florida. She parks in a no parking zone and hopes to get a room when the motel opens. She looks at an article that her sister Tanya had saved. Letty feels the horror and chaos of the last 36 hours. Her niece Maya is in her car seat. Four-year-old Maya has cried almost constantly since leaving New York. At one point, she frantically cried for her mom in a restaurant, prompting Letty to leave quickly. At another, she had a milkshake, then threw it up. Letty has a text from her friend Zoey.
