Summary
In Chapter 8, in January 1960, Ruben prepared for Netanyahu’s visit. Meanwhile, it snowed steadily. Ruben shoveled the walk, hoping Netanyahu would cancel. Edith prepared a large spread, as if she were trying “to prove her wifeliness,” or Ruben’s department’s “unreasonable demands” (140). Ruben waited by the window like “Judy waiting for a date” (141).
When the car pulled up, Ruben watched three children get out and throw snow at each other. Ruben stepped outside. The parents yelled at the children, screaming “out in that language” of Ruben’s youth and of God (144). Netanyahu and Tzila introduced themselves.
Inside, they introduced one another to Edith and the boys, Jonathan, Benjamin, and Iddo. In his note, Netanyahu had not mentioned bringing his whole family. Ruben and Edith asked them to take off their shoes. Ruben noticed their worn socks.
