Summary

In Chapter 1, Tenji Nakamura is repatriated and living among the ruins of Tokyo. One day he sees a list of soldiers being sought as war criminals. Nakamura's name is on the list. He considers suicide but hears shouts from a nearby hole in the rubble. When he goes inside, he sees a young prostitute, known as a pan-pan girl. A young Japanese man is also in the room and the body of a dead American soldier. Nakamura sees some food on a table in the room. In Chapter 2, Nakamura enters the room. The Japanese boy attacks but Nakamura kills him and then wolfs down two dumplings. The girl has taken some money from the soldier's body and Nakamura demands it. Nakamura works on the scene to erase any trace of his presence and knows he'll be safe as long as the girl...
