Summary

Narrated in the first person by Molly Gray, the novel’s protagonist, The Mystery Guest opens with Molly recounting a story her grandmother once told her. In the story, a maid who works in a castle is fired by wealthy landowners because they suspect her of stealing a silver spoon. Builders eventually tear up the floor and discover the true thief: a rat lying dead with the spoon.

In Chapter 1, 29-year-old Molly comments that her beloved grandmother, who was also a maid, died four years ago. Gran taught Molly everything she knows about being a maid; she still hears Gran’s voice in her head. Molly is Head Maid at the five-star Regency Grand Hotel. She knows people consider maids lowly, but Molly is proud of her accomplishments. Mr. Snow, the hotel manager, praises Molly’s positive attitude.
