Section 12: Volume 4, chapters 1-6 Summary
In the first chapter of volume four, Emily finds Valancourt in the library with Count De Villefort that evening. Emily responds with silence to Valancourt's solicitations, finally telling him that she cannot think of him as the one she once loved due to his ill behavior. This is the last time she will see him due to his own conduct. Valancourt blames Count De Villefort for promoting Du Pont, but Emily insists it is his own behavior that makes this necessary. Valancourt admits that he is ruined by debt, laments yield to Paris's allurements, promises to always love Emily, and bids her farewell. Emily agrees to see Valancourt one more time because she is miserable at renouncing him. She is too concerned with her situation to recall her appointment with Dorothee. She wakes sick the next morning...
