Summary

Agatha begs Archie not to leave her in “Chapter 39: The Manuscript.” He agrees to a three-month trial reconciliation period as well as a vacation with just them two. Agatha takes him to Guéthary, France. Archie remains cold and even cruel towards her.

Archie puzzles over accusatory newspaper headlines in “Chapter 40: Days eight and nine after the disappearance.” The next day, he invites Rosalind to help clean his car so that they may spend some time together. Their gardener wonders why Archie does not join in the Great Sunday Hunt, where there are 53 search parties with 30-40 people each, all looking for Agatha.
