Hacienda La Amistad, Nuevo León, Mexico, October 1910, January 1919 – 1930, twenty-first century
Hacienda La Amistad is where the majority of the novel is set. It is the primary home of the Morales family on their plantation in Linares. The home and the land had been passed down through generations of male Moraleses and is under the ownership of Francisco Morales and his wife, Beatriz. The family lives together in the home, and the myriad of workers live in cabins with their family. Sharecroppers tend their allotted portion of the land, paying for their stay with half of their yield. In October 1910, Simonopio is brought to La Amistad as an infant. Francisco spends his time protecting the land from expropriation, which is ultimately achieved by transforming it into orange orchards.
