Summary

Mercedes Garza fell ill and died the same day in “The Spaniard Arrives in October.” The city held an extravagant funeral that spread the infection. People died daily of the Spanish flu that October of 1918, and the gravedigger made rounds every morning to collect corpses. One mother left her child, nearly dead, out for collection.
