Summary
In Chapter 71, "Inspector Umbelino and the Truth," the Inspector begins to work through the clues. He looks up the information about Alphonse from three years earlier when everyone believed he drowned. He telephones Luigi and asks him to come to the police station to answer questions. Luigi says they are afraid of the police and refuses. Inspector Umbelino goes to their home, and Ana identifies Inspector Garretta from a photograph.
In Chapter 72, "Uncle Alves," Alphonse's uncle, Alves Morro, identifies Alphonse's body. Alves is a rude man who cares nothing about Alphonse. Alves asks who will pay for the funeral. With Alphonse's identification firmly established, Inspector Umbelino faces the fact that a fellow police officer may be involved in the crime.
