The Warehouse, New York City, 1939-1940
Artists commissioned by the WPA work in a warehouse overlooking the Hudson River. The many artists in the space are employed to paint representational art to be displayed in public buildings throughout the country. Alizée paints at a makeshift desk made out of a shipping crate and Lee is stationed beside her. Alizée spends most of her days working long hours at the warehouse. She begins her friendship with Mrs. Roosevelt during the First Lady's visit the warehouse to inspect the mural projects. By permission of Mrs. Roosevelt, Alizée works on 'Light of America,' an abstract piece that is to be displayed at the New York Public Library. The painting is destroyed shortly before Alizée's disappearance.
