Summary
Chapter 45 follows Mark’s perspective. He learns that Louise Bothwell, a fellow artist from the WPA, had found out about 'Montage' and the mural switch. Louise had alerted the WPA and said she would soon call the police. Mark races back to Alizée’s apartment, having left only an hour before. She gives him the cut up mural, pieces of 'Montage' in a large cloth bag. She urges Mark to hide the paintings among himself, Lee, Jack, and Bill until she returns. He fears for Alizée’s safety and her state of mind. Alizée tells Mark she is going to the WPA office to collect her paycheck. He wants wishes to follow her, but she says she will never forgive him if he does not hide the squares.
In Chapter 46, Alizée walks through the streets thinking of her escape...
