Summary
Chapter 39 follows Lee’s perspective as herself, Mark, Jack and Bill search the streets for Alizée, who had not returned. At three o’clock in the morning, they regroup at Alizée’s apartment and have not found her. Jack regrets his drunken comments and stupidity. As the men resume their search, Lee waits in Alizée’s apartment. Lee believes “'Montage' was revolutionary … For Alizée and for themselves; Alizée’s ideas were opening up new avenues for their own work. They all felt it” (230). Mark and Bill return to the apartment without Jack and leave again to continue searching. Lee remains in Alizée’s apartment and is unable to sleep.
