Summary
Alizée meets Hiram Bingham in The Rose saloon in Chapter 31. Hiram gives her an envelope containing a single sheet of paper, which is a copy. He plans to give Alizée the original after she finds a safe way to get the copy to Mrs. Roosevelt. Alizée cannot believe what she reads. Hiram says, in reference to Breckinridge Long: “he violates the law with impunity – thinks he’s above the rules … He’s a completely immoral man. Fixated on his career and his hatreds” (188). Long had sent messages “to consulates in Europe ordering them to stop granting visas to Jews … Written orders. Completely illegal and against FDR’s policies” (188). However, Hiram does not have access to the orders. Hiram tells her that FDR will “have to get rid” of Long, as his actions were “outright insubordination,” and potentially “a federal crime...
