Summary
Chapter 27 features a letter from Alizée’s aunt Chantal, dated July 1940. Chantal writes that neither Oncle nor Henri have returned and she has not heard from Babette. Herself and Alain will stay at a farm owned by the brother of Oncle’s friend at the university. “Every day they are taking more Jews away. Sometimes they shoot people. Whenever they want. For no reason … it is vital you know what is happening so you can tell people in America” (170). Chantal tells Alizée, “all of the rumors you hear are true. Even the ones you cannot believe. And there is worse to come, of this I am sure” (171). Alizée’s aunt professes deep love for her and tells her to carry their family into the future “no matter what happens” (171). The letter triggers a depersonalization experience in Alizée.
