Summary
In Chapter 3, Alizée arrives at home to find a postcard from her brother Henri. Henri was born in France and she had been born in Massachusetts. Her family lived in America until Henry returned to Arles and stayed with Tante and Oncle to attend school. Alizée feels as though no one is capable of understanding her experience of having lost both parents, so she only speaks of them to her family.
Alizée wonders why she has not heard from her family in France for over two months. Alizée remembers her parents, “scientists, bohemians uninterested in religion or conventionality” (19) “Her social, high-spirited parents had been very different from her aunt and uncle, both of whom were teachers, introverted and studious, hardly ever going out unless it had something to do with university or the synagogue” (19).
