Summary
Diệu Lan continues her story about living through the Land Reform in 1955. The next morning after their escape, Diệu Lan was able to gather some food before they continued to walk. Diệu Lan told her children that her plan was to walk to Hà Nội, where she could find her childhood teacher and potentially get a job.
Motivated by the love for her children, Diệu Lan and her family continued to walk. They stumble upon a farmer that points out their expensive clothing makes them a target. Eventually, Ngọc caught a fever and her children become physically exhausted and starved. They walked to a nearby village market and begged for money from stramgers; they get 12 cents and can afford two bowls of pho.
