A landing boat is waiting to take Kutuzov, Sinclair and Cargill to their new assignments on the Blockade. As they proceed back into the palace, Charlie relates the story of the condemned man who suggests he be given a year to teach the ruler's horse to sing. The man cites just a few things that could happen in a year, such as the ruler dying, the man himself dying, or perhaps the horse will begin to sing. To Charlie, it illustrates how completely alien humans really are.
