Heavily mined asteroids, an odd atmosphere, and another ship headed out to meet the humans provide for a complexity to the plot and at the same time the subplot of the main and supporting characters happens. The asteroid is the first hint of the incredible age of the Motie race and culture, along with the variety of the species. Unknown to the humans in the story, this is the first key piece to the secrets the Moties will hide from the humans...
