MacArthur's departure and approach to the new jump point continue to highlight the inherent conflict created between understanding and assumptions when dealing with data. Kevin Renner is a perfect foil for Horvath's struggle to see that anyone else's reading of the data from the encounter with the pod might be valuable or accurate. As a sailor at heart and someone who's basically non-military and non-scientific, his perspective is unique. He also adds the quality of a "common man" to the conversation.
