Summary

This section begins with a flashback to the year 2000. A six-year-old Grace interrupts Marilyn and her older siblings from adult girl talk and is labeled a buzzkill. Liza tries to assert her independence by getting a tattoo but it becomes infected so she must tell David about it. Wendy marries Miles, becoming a wealthy socialite. She also gets a call from Violet, presumably about her unplanned pregnancy.

In Chapter 23, Violet is distraught and barely speaking with Matt. She has a difficult conversation with Marilyn, in which Marilyn holds Violet accountable for her ill-treatment of Jonah. Completely lost and weary, Violet cries herself to sleep, forgetting about Wyatt's music recital. Jonah goes to the recital as promised, and finds Wyatt in tears.
