Summary

This section begins with a flashback entitled "1996," that describes how Gillian Levin and David's friendship deepens. The two begin to go out to dinner together and David questions whether or not it is inappropriate, despite its platonic nature. Gillian is lonely, with few connections and David is immersed in his practice, marriage, and growing family. It serves as a reprieve for both. At home, Violet questions Marilyn about her choice to give up college in order to be a full-time mom.
