Summary
As Isabel began her life in the convent, silence swallowed the house and the family. Isabel consumed all of Soledad’s attention, whether she or her lingering silence occupied the house. Ulises continued excelling in his studies of the classics and growing from his obsessive work in Henri’s fields, causing his professors to dub him “The Titan.” His work grinded to a halt, however, when a tent on the fields collapsed on him, concussing him and landing him in the hospital. In the hospital, Soledad started praying again. Isabel also visited him, with Isabel’s deaf students following behind her on her third visit. Isabel then shared with her brother her plans to continue her service working with the deaf in Guatemala, as well as the reason for her silence: the sound of her own voice had started inflicting her with piercing...
