Summary
In Book III, “Mila,” a girl Sil’s age named Mila moved into the Morningside with her mother in the middle of the night. Sil and her mother knocked on their door to determine who they were, as Popovich had not informed them of their imminent arrival. They learned they were from Back Home.
Sil wanted to befriend Mila, but Mila got “herself into school right away” and was always busy (143). Sil tried to intrigue her by telling her Ena’s ghost stories and alluding to her protections. Mila did not pay attention to her until Sil told her about Bezi and the dogs. Thrilled by the story, Mila wanted to seek answers immediately. Sil insisted they had to earn the information. Mila then suggested they follow Bezi on her evening walk to determine the truth.
Sil was hesitant, but agreed...
