Summary
Chapter 30 is narrated by Marmaduke Temple’s wife, Elizabeth Franklin Temple. One night, Elizabeth had a dream about her husband’s death, and she worried that Marmaduke would soon die. The next day was an election in the state legislature. Marmaduke denies having helped to rig the election in favor of his political party, but Elizabeth believes him to be lying. To keep up the appearance that his victory was legitimate, Marmaduke decided to go out and celebrate. Elizabeth tried to persuade him to stay home, but she failed. Meanwhile, Davey Shipman’s wife, Noname, gave birth to a child with red hair like Marmaduke’s. Shipman immediately deduced that Marmaduke either raped Noname or had an affair with her.
