Summary

In Chapter 19, after Willie finishes reading Charlotte and Cinnamon’s letters, she feels shaken. While Sarah Temple’s journal entries were generally cheerful and poetic about Templeton, Charlotte and Cinnamon’s letters were full of dark secrets. Willie also finds it so odd that Templeton apparently used to be a bustling hub city, not the quiet place it is now. Willie receives a letter from Primus Dwyer saying that Willie will likely be able to return to school. However, Willie is devastated that Dwyer offers no apology for his own behavior, nor any acknowledgement of romantic feelings between them. Vivienne comforts Willie, and Willie asks her more about her Christianity. Vivienne and John have not had sex, as John opposes premarital intercourse. It soon becomes evident to Willie that Vivienne really does derive some true sense of comfort and fulfillment from her newfound religious...
