Hayduke and Smith begin celebrating their latest victory, but Smith, sensing danger, stops to look back at their pursuers. Smith sees Bishop Love joining the search for the men. Smith informs Hayduke as they drive in panic that it is up to him to form an escape plan. Hayduke offers to shoot cows and place them in the road, but instead, Smith suggests lighting a vine-covered fence on fire after they pass through it. This slows the pursuers, but only briefly. Hayduke finally offers to use a steel bar to move boulders onto the road below after Smith passes, and to walk the rest of the way out of the canyon after making sure Bishop is stopped.
