Throughout the book, Melinda never shies away from the fact that she lives a rich and privileged life. This is important to her reliability as a narrator because she does not try and pretend that she fully understands the people she is working with. However, she embraces the idea that people must understand the culture and develop empathy for the people they are working with in order to change their lives for the better. Melinda visits the countries she works with. She shares the stories of everyone she meets. But she is also willing to pull off of her own experiences when it applies to the issue...
