Summary

The seventh chapter is titled “Ginger.” Tilo does not have clothing appropriate for outside. She tries to conjure clothes using the spices, but the result is fragile. She goes to Sears where she piles a cart high with things. She decides to buy only one outfit, a coat, and a mirror. She goes to Geeta's office. Geeta hopes Tilo is there on her mother's behalf. She is staying with a girlfriend and has not moved in with Juan after all, knowing her parents would not approve. She is angry at her grandfather for introducing the idea of an arranged marriage. She believes Tilo has magic power, approves of using them to unite her fractured family, and gives Tilo her phone number to pass along to her grandfather. Geeta feels better at the end of their visit. She hugs Tilo, the touch lingering...
