Summary

The Miseducation of Cameron Post began with Part One in the Summer of 1989 in Miles City, Montana when protagonist and narrator Cameron Post was 12 years old. In Chapter 1, Cameron shoplifted from the local store with her friend Irene Klauson while, unknown to her, her parents died on their annual visit to Quake Lake. Cameron had been staying with her grandma. She left the house to hang out with Irene. Irene said that Grandma Post was crazy. Cameron recalled the day before, when Irene had dared her to kiss her. They had been talking about how they would be teenagers soon and would not know how to kiss anyone. Cameron kissed Irene after her dare.
