The locker
Max’s locker represents a trap. Max has created a trap for himself in that he does not want to be honest about Thug’s bullying. Business as usual is being locked in a locker. As soon as he realizes that he wants something different, he is able to symbolically kick his way out of the locker and out of his trap.
The Costume
The costume Max dons during his transformation is also Erin’s costume for the cancelled school play. However, for Max, it is a physical representation of the changes going on inside. He only found the costume after he developed the courage to finally kick his way out of the locker and explore the boiler room and the internal workings of the school.
Thug
Thug symbolizes bullies in general, and being Max’s archnemesis. When Max was still stuck in the locker...
