Part One, Chapters 19, 20, and Interim Summary
In Chapter Nineteen, Shay prepares for Corbin's funeral. Thora K accuses her of being a witch. Though she did not love Corbin she misses him. Brandy's body is pregnant, which excites Thora K but depresses Shay. On a walk to the well she encounters Hutch Maddon, who declares his intention to eventually marry her. President McKinley is assassinated and Thora K drags the mirror out, requesting Shay to warn them if anything might happen to Roosevelt. Shay gives birth to Penny, and Dr. Seaton claims she may never have another child. Penny died after two weeks of life.
In Chapter Twenty, Hutch Maddon invites Shay for a ride on his wagon. He takes her to his brand new ranch house, hoping to impress her enough that she will accept his marriage proposal. She accepts.
