Summary
When Chapter 52 begins, Crivano is on a boat near San Cristofero della Pace. He feels ill and vomits most of Serena’s liquor. When the gondolier docks, Crivano is so focused on keeping the mirror safe that he leaves the boat without his walkingstick. The gondolier chases after him to return it. He stops in the church even though he did not intend to do so, and he thinks of Lepanto.
Crivano gets hungry and looks for a place to eat. He finds a small casino and eats quickly, as some of the players keep glaring at him. After he finishes his wine, he decides to approach them and asks if they will take a physician’s wager. He allows them to win a small sum and then orders wine for the table.
