Summary
Chapter 46 begins with Stanley waking up in the squat on Horizon Court to find that Claudio is not there. He assumes that Claudio spent the night at Welles’s house after he and Cynthia got back from the movie. He thinks about why he left early last night and reasons that it was partly because he felt embarrassed for crying and partly because his conversation with Welles was no longer productive. There was another source of uneasiness that he cannot quite identify, and he does not dwell on it too long because it makes him sad.
Stanley wakes up again a few hours later, and there is still no sign of Claudio. He looks at the list of authors Welles gave him, and he cannot make sense of it. He thinks of how Welles is continuing to elude him. He starts to think...
