Summary
Chapter 41 begins Section V of the novel, which takes place in Venice Beach in 1958 and is told from Stanley’s perspective. The chapter opens as Stanley wakes up in his and Claudio’s secret lair. When he first wakes up, he has to remind himself that he is not in New York. He marvels at how much he has traveled and wonders if anyone would ever want to read his story. He reflects on his eight-month journey to Venice Beach, and he regrets how he acted when he finally met Welles. Claudio is still asleep, but Stanley is wide awake now. He pulls at his jeans and winces when he remembers his injured leg. He cleans the wound and bandages it with a white T-shirt. He takes pride in performing a simple task to take care of himself, and he thinks of Crivano...
