Summary
When Chapter 36 begins, Curtis and Veronica are walking through the casino at the Doge’s Palace. They take an escalator up to the next floor, and Curtis thinks about when Veronica pulled a gun on him. For some reason, his knowledge that she carries a gun does not make him nervous now. He suddenly gets a feeling that he is “never going to see Stanley Glass alive in the world again” (275). As they get off the escalator, they pass a living statue. They buy some doughnuts and walk along the canal. Curtis notices that Veronica has a large tattoo of a tree on her lower back, and he thinks about his own tattoos. Veronica and Curtis observe the replicated scenery and comment on how fake and overpriced it is. Veronica says that she hates this place because it is so unoriginal.
