Summary
Graciela’s great grandmother came to the United States with only her favorite necklace. She worked hard for a living, cooking and cleaning, and she eventually owned her own bakery. Graciela does not know the name of the boy slumped in her car after the party. He was drugged, and Graciela was unwilling to leave him behind despite not knowing anything about him. He moved to town recently from a more rural county and had been the subject of teasing by some of the schoolgirls.
Graciela is also struggling with the after-effects of what happened to her at the party, and she is desperate to leave the hospital before they can begin questioning her. She leaves him there alone, regretfully. She resolves to pretend that the night never happened. She finds a mirror in her rosebush at home and cuts her eye...
