Summary

In Chapter V, Gore was treated for frostbite on the ship and confessed to the ship’s doctor that he had killed a man by mistake while out hunting.

In Chapter 5, the narrator recounted a fear of spiders during her childhood which her father attempted to cure by telling her stories about a spider in the garden, whom the narrator started to watch. One day the narrator caught a butterfly and gave it to the spider to eat. She reflected that it wasn’t that she was no longer scared of spiders but that, if there was something to be scared of, she wanted to be on their side.

The narrator received a cryptic postcard from Quentin giving clues about a location to meet him in secret, which the narrator did. Quentin confessed to the narrator that he thought the device...
