Summary
In Chapter III, an old wound on Gore’s hand started to reopen because of scurvy. He remembered when he received the wound: a gun exploded in his hand, knocking him onto his back. When someone came to see if he was alright, he said, “Killed the bird” (67). Gore planned to go out hunting the next day.
In Chapter 3, the narrator recounts tests that the expats were subjected to in order to test their empathy, including one that involved exposing them to images of soldiers injured during World War One. The expats responded badly to this test and it was decided that information about other significant atrocities such as the Holocaust, Hiroshima, and 9/11 should be withheld from them for the time being.
